Introduction

Kenya Defeat Diabetes Association (KDDA) is a non-profit making charitable association representing the low income and extremely poor people living with diabetes and hypertension in Kenya. The idea of starting KDDA was reached on 16th March, 2012 by a group of diabetes volunteers from 18 counties at a meeting held then under the full knowledge of the Ministry of Health (DNCD) and Key Stakeholders. On 21st June the same year, KDDA was registered by the Registrar of Societies Nairobi Law Office under certificate No. 37685. Currently KDDA is a National Umbrella body representing more than 400 diabetes patient support groups registered across 25 out of 28 counties reached by KDDA.

Our Objectives

  1. Making diabetes a community agenda
  2. Advocate and lobby for the rights and responsibilities of diabetes/hypertension people.
  3. To promote and enhance diabetes/hypertension self-monitoring management care and prevention at grass root level.
  4. To create awareness to individuals, families and those at risk, encouraging them to understand diabetes /hypertension and take action.
  5. To establish promote and network with existing and upcoming diabetes/hypertension support groups in 47 counties of Kenya.
  6. To partner and be a link between researchers, collaborators, partners, and other stakeholders to the people living with diabetes and hypertension.

Main Challenges

  1. Low prioritization of diabetes and other NCDs
  2. Preferential allocation of resources to infectious disease programs (HIV, TB, Malaria).
  3. Overemphasis of infectious diseases at the expense of NCDs
  4. Inadequate information on diabetes and hypertension in the community.
  5. Competing, conflict of interest, duplication of activities and resources.
